Bach Flower Essences by Pat Bromley
This article explores the use of Bach Flower Essences as tools that can help individuals with emotional, mental, and spiritual issues. These remedies can be used as a support to other therapeutic interventions.
The remedies are all prepared from the flowers of plants and trees, are non habit forming. They are prescribed according to the person’s state of mind or emotions, which is the primary cause of disease. I have included the original descriptions of personality types, given by Edward Bach in his book –The Twelve Healers and Other Remedies; and a description of the negative and positive states a person may be experiencing when they are out of touch with their Inner Guidance.
AGRIMONY: The jovial, cheerful, humorous people who love peace and are distressed by argument or quarrel, to avoid which they will agree to give up much. Though generally they have troubles and are tormented and restless and worried in mind or in body, they hide their cares behind their humour and jesting and are considered very good friends to know. They often take alcohol or drugs in excess, to stimulate themselves and help themselves bear their trials with cheerfulness. –The Twelve Healers and Other Remedies
Agrimony relates to the Soul’s potential for honesty and its ability to confront other people. While trying to conceal anything that is upsetting in life, these people are discounting the fact that life is composed of dualities. Where there is beauty there is also ugliness; where there is happiness there is also sadness; where there is peace there is also conflict. In trying to only see one side of life, instead of wholeness, they will lose their connection with their inner self and inner guidance.
This remedy will help bring back their honesty with themselves, allow them to confront their darker side, see their wholeness, and connect to their true being. Both sides of themselves can start to become integrated, gaining strength, openness and honesty. Agrimony helps to calm and focus the energy of the heart chakra promoting an inner calm and balance.
ASPEN: Vague unknown fears, for which there can be given no explanation, no reason. Yet the patient may be terrified of something terrible going to happen, he knows not what. These vague unexplainable fears may haunt by night or day. Sufferers often are afraid to tell their trouble to others. –The Twelve Healers and Other Remedies
The acute sensitivity of their Soul leads to them being open to other planes of existence, bringing into their unconscious mind thoughts and images of other people and places of the collective unconscious. The unawareness of what is theirs and what are transpersonal experiences is unclear giving rise to fears and forebodings for the future. Their personal boundaries are blurred they are unable to make a connection with their Higher Self.It is likely that the sacral chakra is open and vulnerable and Aspen will help calm and heal this so a more comfortable flow is achieved there. It will assist in centering and protecting, helping them to connect to their inner self, thus allowing them to distinguish between what is real for themselves and be less open to outside influences.
BEECH For those who feel the need to see more good and beauty in all that surrounds them. And, although much appears to be wrong, to have the ability to see the good growing within. So as to be able to be more tolerant, lenient and understanding of the different way each individual and all things are working to their own final perfection. –The Twelve Healers and Other Remedies
In their need to have a beautiful world, Beech people are overcritical, irritable, and intolerant of others. With their fixed ideas of how they want the world to be they do not have sufficient empathy, tolerance and compassion to connect with others so feel separated and cut off. This negative perspective also separates them off from their own inner guidance.
Beech can help in opening their connection with their higher self, listening to their inner guidance, thus understanding other’s differences; and creating a more loving connection with their heart. Accepting themselves and being able to see themselves as others see them helps their brow chakra to make the right connections to their centre of truth.
CENTUARY : Kind, quiet, gentle people who are over-anxious to serve others. They overtax their strength in their endeavours. Their wish so grows upon them that they become more servants than willing helpers. Their good nature leads them to do more than their own share of work, and in so doing they may neglect their own particular mission in life.-The Twelve Healers and Other Remedies
Their awareness of their own needs and sense of self is under-developed, leading them to give in to the needs of others, to the detriment of their own needs and life path. They could become under the influence of negative spiritual influences or exploitation with this combination of weakness of will and desire to serve.
Centuary can help them see that to strengthen their will and walk their path, will help in the greater cosmic scheme to serve others as well. The heart chakra will become rebalanced, allowing them to love themselves and stand up for themselves with true inner strength
CERATO: Those who have not sufficient confidence in themselves to make their own decisions. They constantly seek advice from others, and are often misguided.- The Twelve Healers and Other remedies
Cerato is the remedy for people who lack faith in their judgement; they do not have the confidence to trust their Inner Guidance and intuition. They rely on other people for advice, which does not fit in with their own life path. Confused, they become more unsure of their own opinions and intuitions.
Cerato helps them have more faith in their judgement so that they can listen to their inner voice. Their subsequent confidence and trust in their intuition and inner guidance allows them to follow their own way with responsibility. As their anxiety is released the strength in the Solar Plexus is restored and their confidence is more secure.
CHERRY PLUM: Fear of the mind being over-strained, of reason giving way, of doing fearful and dreaded things, not wished and known wrong, yet there comes the thought and impulse to do them. –The Twelve Healers and Other Remedies
The Cherry Plum people fear that they is going to lose control of oneself and do something dreadful, such as injuring others or going mad or acting irrationally leads to a fear of their own emotions. The result may be to suppress or control the emotions in certain situations.
A reconnection with the emotions and the knowledge that they can be expressed in a different way with the help of their inner guidance and an open heart can assist the flow of emotions without the fear. Cherry Plum can help by grounding the Base Chakra and reconnecting the Sacral Chakra so they are in touch with their inner voice.
CHESTNUT BUD: For those who do not take full advantage of observation and experience, and who take a longer time than others to learn the lessons of daily life. Whereas one experience would be enough for some, such people find it necessary to have more, sometimes several, before the lesson is learnt. Therefore, to their regret, they find themselves having to make the same error on different occasions when once would have been enough, or observation of others could have spared them even that one fault.-The Twelve Healers and Other Remedies
Chestnut Bud relates to the Soul’s potential for learning and is appropriate for people who fail to learn the lessons of life. They repeat the same mistakes again and again, refusing to learn from a past experience. They ignore the fact that they create their future by their past actions and if a lesson is not learnt; then it is presented to them again in the future.
This remedy will help them to focus in the present, giving them a new perspective, and learn from what is happening now. It will enhance the energy of the Throat Chakra, helping to release the blocks to understanding and allow them to move on with knowledge of their true path.
CHICORY: Those who are very mindful of the needs of others; they tend to be over-full of care for children, relatives, friends, always finding something that should be put right. They are continually correcting what they consider wrong, and enjoy doing so. They desire that those for whom they care should be near them.-The Twelve Healers and Other Remedies
The Soul has potential for unselfish love, but in a negative Chicory state that love can be emotionally demanding for those on whom it is bestowed. Their love can lead them to hold on to their loved ones and keep them dependent and close to them, stifling both their own development and others.
Acting on the Brow Centre Chicory helps develop the insight and intuition from their Higher Self, needed for them to let go and trust their own path. Thus allowing others to freely grow and develop, their love can then be given unconditionally and intuitively when needed.
CLEMATIS: Those who are dreamy, drowsy, not fully awake, no great interest in life. Quiet people, not really happy in their present circumstances, living more in the future than in the present; living in hopes of happier times, when their ideals may come true. In illness some make little or no effort to get well, and in certain cases may even look forward to death, in the hope of better times; or maybe, meeting again some beloved one whom they have lost.- The Twelve Healers and Other Remedies
These people are disconnected from reality, never able to ground their thoughts and ideas in their present world, or start on the Life Path they came for. Their dreams of the future do not manifest as they do not lay foundations for them in the present.
Clematis can act as a bridge between the mind and physical reality, to bring their dreams into being and in accordance with their Soul’s intention. Associated with the throat chakra, it will bring a clearer and grounded vision with their increased focussed attention to their intuition.
CRAB APPLE: This is the remedy of cleansing. For those who feel as if they had something not quite clean about themselves. Often it is something of apparently little importance: in others there may be more serious disease which is almost disregarded compared to the one thing on which they concentrate. In both types they are anxious to be free from the one particular thing which is greatest in their minds and which seems so essential to them that it should be cured. They become despondent if treatment fails. Being a cleanser, this remedy purifies wounds if the patient has reason to believe that some poison has entered which must be drawn out. – The Twelve Healers and Other Remedies
Focussed in their physical reality, Crab Apple people strive for perfection and get obsessive about minor details, often to do with cleanliness, appearance and order. This external behaviour is a reflection of the disharmony, disconnection and imbalance within themselves.
Within the body both the Crown Chakra and the Base Chakra work in unsion, connecting them both to their white light and to the earth. Crab Apple will help to re-establish this link allowing the higher energies to flow down and cleanse the Base Chakra, which is blocked with the thoughts of uncleanliness, and align them with their Higher Purpose.
ELM: Those who are doing good work, are following the calling of their life and who hope to do something of importance, and this often for the benefit of humanity. At times there may be periods of depression when they feel that the task they have undertaken is too difficult, and not within the power of a human being. –The Twelve Healers and Other Remedies
Elm is the remedy for people suffering a temporary loss of confidence due to the overwhelming amount of responsibility they have taken on. The Higher Self is asking for them to consider whether they are following their own path, or doing too much for others; but they are not listening to their own Guidance.
Reconnection to the Base Chakra so they are able to take a step back and see the bigger picture of their Life Path is necessary. Elm allows them to do this, so they can regain the balance and strength to continue in their normally confident way.
GENTIAN: Those who are easily discouraged. They may be progressing well in illness, or in the affairs of their daily life, but any small delay or hindrance to progress causes doubt and soon disheartens them. – The Twelve Healers and Other Remedies
Belief is a positive outcome does not come easily to Gentian people; their perceptions are that intellect alone will help them solve their problems. Their disappointment leads to them drawing away from their Inner Guidance, having negative thoughts and blocking their contact.
The Soul’s need to trust can be helped by Gentian and so help them to believe that anything is possible with trust and faith. Working through the Solar Plexus it can help to reconnect them to their Higher Chakra, thus trusting and paying positive attention to their Guidance.
GORSE: Very great hopelessness, they have given up belief that more can be done for them. Under persuasion or to please others they may try different treatments, at the same time assuring those around that there is so little hope of relief. –The Twelve Healers and Other Remedies
With long-lasting difficulties of life these people give up hope and resist their Guidance from their Higher Self. They are unable to see new possibilities for growth, allowing their vitality to dwindle with despair, negativity and resignation.
Gorse can help re-establish the Soul quality of Hope, helping them to want to actively be part of life again. The bright yellow flowers of Gorse light up the Solar Plexus, connecting it to the Heart, opening them to their hopes for the future.
HEATHER: Those who are always seeking the companionship of anyone who may be available, as they find it necessary to discuss their own affairs with others, no matter whom it may be. They are very unhappy if they have to be alone for any length of time. – The Twelve Healers and Other Remedies
Heather people in their negative state are entirely centered on themselves, unable to function when alone, with no awareness of the issues of others. They have no sense of their Higher Self and turn outward to other people rather than inward to their Guidance for help and understanding.
Through a greater connection with their Crown Chakra they will learn, that it is not necessary to draw on others, that their self-identity can come from their Inner Guidance. The Universe will provide all that is needed for their growth and development once they have tapped into that energy.
HOLLY: For those who sometimes are attacked by thoughts of such kind as jealousy, envy, revenge, suspicion. For the different forms of vexation. Within themselves they may suffer much, often when there is no real cause for their unhappiness. –The Twelve Healers and Other Remedies
Love is an all powerful emotion and its darker side can be hatred, resentment, anger, envy and jealousy. In Holly people their love energy has been misunderstood and the flow has reversed giving rise to feeling of separation and pain.
The Heart Chakra is about unconditional love and understanding and Holly protects them from everything that is not universal love. Holly helps release these negative emotions and they realise that they have a connection everything through their universal all-encompassing love energy.
HONEYSUCKLE: Those who live much in the past, perhaps a time of great happiness, or memories of a lost friend, or ambitions which have not come true. They do not expect further happiness such as they have had. –The Twelve Healers and Other Remedies
Physically in the present, but mentally in the past, this person cannot live their Life Path in the present. Ignoring their Inner Guidance, they remain stuck in their memories with no spiritual energy for the future.
Honeysuckle, through the throat chakra, helps them clear the illusions about the past and learn to recall the past without needing to relive it. Connecting again with their Inner Self they can learn to live in the here and now with a future to look forward to.
Bach Flower Essences are generally recommended to be taken, six drops night and morning made up from the mother tincture but practitioners may well use their intuition for dosage.
If you want to know more, the founder of the essences Ian White has written two books; Bush Flower Essences (Book 1) and Bush Flower Healing (Book 2). There is also a set of picture cards, which can be used for people to intuitively select their own essences.
