The Higher Wisdom or Higher Self Connection Exercise by David Furlong

Connecting to your 'Higher-Self' using the symbolism of the Sun.

In 1974 Dr Ralph Allison coined the term the "Inner Self Helper" (ISH) for that part of the psyche that maintains the balance of the Self in multiple personality cases. It has subsequently been recognised by other therapists to be a primary key in the healing of emotional, psychological and spiritual conditions. The ISH can be identified under different names being equated with the Soul, Higher Self or the Daemon, depending on which particular system or reference that is used. What is emerging is the extraordinary power of this aspect of our being to effect change at every level and to resolve deep seated psychological issues, such as possession states, when its healing power is accessed. In Dr Tom Zinser's book "Soul Centered Healing", the connection to the 'Higher Self' (ISH) is shown to be the single most important aspect in healing difficult psychological and spirit possession situations. What then are the techniques that can be used to connect to this source of seeming infinite wisdom within us and how can its power be utilised to transform and empower all elements of our life?

The following exercise is one way that can be adopted to access this source of limitless wisdom and power. There are different techniques that can be used and you can modify the following exercise to best suit your purpose. We recommend that you first read the section on accessing the 'Soul Consciousness' by way of preparation.

The following exercise can take as little as five minutes but could also be much longer depending upon how much time you wish to devote to exploring this connection. It should be practised regularly so that the process can be speeded up to become almost instantaneous.

Connecting to the Higher Self or Higher Wisdom Exercise
Aim:  To begin to access into your Higher Self consciousness
Find a place where you can sit undisturbed.

  1. Find somewhere quiet to sit in an upright chair with your feet uncrossed and placed firmly on the floor.
  2. Close your eyes and become aware of your breathing feeling at each out breath that you are going into a deeper part of your being. Do this for ten breaths and consciously relax all of the muscles in your physical body.
  3. Now imagine that somewhere within your physical body (preferably the heart area) that there is a tiny point of light within you that represents your inner Divine Self, the inner core aspect of your Soul consciousness. Allow yourself time to connect to this part of your being by imagining that you are moving closer to it in your mind. As you do this feel that the light is expanding within you.
  4. Next imagine that way above your head the Sun is shining. The Sun is the source of light and life for this solar system and in this case also represents a link to your 'Higher Self'.
  5. Now imagine that a beam of sunlight is coming down from the Sun through the top of your head and linking to the core central light within your body. What do you experience when this happens?
  6. There are four ways that your 'Higher-Self' can communicate with you. Through inner images, through inner verbal messages or an inner voice, through your feelings and through your body sensations. Imagine that the Sun, your Higher-Self, is communicating to you. What to you see, hear, feel or sense?
  7. If there are specific questions that you wish to ask you can pose them to your 'Higher-Self' and then try to assess the response. This takes a little practice but can be developed. You can also ask this part of your being for help in any area of your life. In effect you are addressing your own Divine Self.
  8. When you have spent five to ten minutes making this connection withdraw back to a normal waking state of consciousness and when you are ready open your eyes and ground your energies by feeling the link through your feet into the earth.

How often should I do this exercise?
We would recommend that this exercise is carried out at least once a day particularly if there is felt to be a lot of challenges in your life. Along with the link to the Soul Consciousness this is the most important foundation stone for all spiritual, healing or psychic work and should be applied at the start of all inner healing work.
