The Core Self or Soul Connection Exercise by David Furlong

Connecting to your 'inner light' as a representation of your Soul link within your body.
The Core Self is another term for your Soul or inner psyche. Most people are unaware of this subtle part of their being and there are good reasons why we forget who we are and where we come from when entering into physical incarnation. Effectively there is an amnesiac block between the life giving Soul energy and the conscious and sub-conscious mind of the body.

There are two primary reasons why this block is in place. Firstly entering into the physical world can be very difficult because of the wide polarity of energies that one can experience here. For many sensitive Souls this is a great challenge, rather like moving from a warm nurturing womb, into a cold harsh world. The Soul/Spirit realm is filled with loving sustaining and beautiful energies so it is quite natural for a Soul perceive an incarnation into a physical body on Earth rather like going to the dentist. Something that needs to be done but is not really welcomed.

The second reason is that the patterns of experience stemming from a past life or lives can get in the way, either because of some trauma sustained or because of a radical change of circumstances. In the present world condition it makes life much simpler and easier to forget who we are or where we have come from, until at least we have matured and begun to wake up spiritually. There are exceptions to this general rule for some Souls do remember some of their past lives from quite a young age and have a real sense of their true home in the spirit realm. As a therapist, when delving beneath the surface of the conscious mind, the one most enduring quality of consciousness that I perceive in most of my clients is not really wanting to be here because life is so painful.

The paradox to this state is that when tackling some of the deep issues that we have there is a real need to draw upon the wisdom and life sustaining energy from this realm of consciousness. So the connection then to the Soul and the 'Higher Self' becomes of crucial importance. To connect into this potent energy does not mean that we immediately remember some or all of our past lives. This may or may not happening depending upon what our Soul consciousness determines is most appropriate. The good news is that it allows us to access a level of higher wisdom and knowledge that can see us through the most obdurate of issues or problems. Within this we do sometimes need to go through a specific experience, rather like the athlete or scholar needing to achieve a certain level of knowledge or skill before they can move to the next stage. So your Soul and 'Higher Self' connection will not necessarily take away a presenting issue or problem. It will nevertheless help you deal with it in the most appropriate way possible.

Connecting to the Soul Consciousness
This simple exercise is a way to begin to connect to this part of your being. There are two important points to remember. First that this subtle part of your being can only be contacted when you are accessing below the level of the normal waking mind, so you will need to spend time consciously relaxing yourself through breathing exercises. Secondly to firmly believe that it is your birthright to connect to this part of your being

The following exercise can take as little as five minutes but could also be much longer depending upon how much time you wish to devote to exploring this connection. It should be practised regularly so that the process can be speeded up to become almost instantaneous.

Connecting to the Core Self or Soul Exercise
Aim:  To begin to access into your Soul consciousness
Find a place where you can sit undisturbed.

  1. Find somewhere quiet to sit in an upright chair with your feet uncrossed and placed firmly on the floor.
  2. Close your eyes and become aware of your breathing feeling at each out breath that you are going into a deeper part of your being. Do this for ten breaths and consciously relax all of the muscles in your physical body.
  3. Now imagine that somewhere within your physical body (preferably the heart area) that there is a tiny point of light within you that represents your inner Divine Self, the inner core aspect of your Soul consciousness. Allow yourself time to connect to this part of your being by imagining that you are moving closer to it in your mind. As you do this feel that the light is expanding within you.
  4. Feel into its energy and affirm its power as the central essence of your being.
  5. Some people have a deep sense of peace when they do this but there is no set response. Allow what feelings and senses that comes from this connection to arise within your mind.
  6. If you wish to deepen the connection you can imagine that there is a door in the light that you open and step through. You will then enter into a whole new inner landscape.
  7. When you have spent five to ten minutes making this connection withdraw back to a normal waking state of consciousness and when you are ready open your eyes and ground your energies by feeling the link through your feet into the earth.

How often should I do this exercise?
We would recommend that this exercise is carried out at least once a day particularly if there is felt to be a lot of challenges in your life. This is the first initiatory step and should be the foundation stone for all spiritual, healing or psychic work. The next stage is learning to connect to our 'Higher Self' or 'Higher Wisdom', which is presented in the next exercise.
