Space Clearing and Setting New Atmospheres by David Furlong

All human activity generates an influence which flows out from us like the ripples formed when a pebble is thrown into a pond. Most of the time these energies are inconsequential in that they do not create any real problems. They can be beneficial to the planet and our environment if our intentions are good, however we only have to look around our world to realise that in some instances very disturbed energy patterns have been and are still being created, such as that produced by warfare and killing. In the fullness of time all of these disturbed energies will need to be cleansed and re-balanced but this will not happen over-night because this type of cleansing work is quite specialist and, in the more severe cases, is best tackled by a group of people rather than a single individual. During the next few chapters we will look at the range of problems that you might confront and how you can start to effectively balance, even in a small way, some of the traumas that have been created by human beings on this planet.

Balancing the energy of your home
A good place to start this process is by looking at the energies of you own home, discovering what is contained there and then balancing its vibrations. This will not only help your home environment but also all of the people who live there, including you. Just for a moment close your eyes and imagine yourself in each room in your house asking yourself the following questions:

    •  How do they seem energetically?
    •  Which rooms or parts of rooms do not feel quite

It is surprising when I have asked my students to carry out this exercise for themselves how often they recognise some problem, which they had only been dimly conscious about before. If you ‘feel’ into the energy of each room in turn you will start to build up a picture, which either feels right and OK or seems problematic in some way. If you are unsure visualise a pair of scales. Do they balance? If not, indicating that something is wrong, you can make a mental note of where you sense the problems lie.

Sensing Disturbed Energies
Everybody is individual so no two people will get exactly the same response when tuning into the subtle energies of a room or building. Here are a few basic questions that you can ask yourself.

  • Does the room or any part of it feel cold?
  • Do I get any uncomfortable sensations or feelings?
  • Do I experience any unpleasant smells?
  • Are there any signs of damp, mould, leaks or dirt?
  • Do I inwardly see any disturbed images, strange faces or ugly forms?
  • Do I hear any strange noises or see apparitions?
  • Does the room feel heavy or claustrophobic?
  • Do I feel fear or sense the hairs on my head/neck standing up?

All of these are examples of what you might experience or feel if the subtle energy is disturbed in any way.

Let us assume to begin with that there is no major difficulty with any of your rooms in your home but that you just wish to clear the influences from the previous occupants of the property and to place a bright new energy there that reflects you. Remember that all mental and emotional activity leaves an influence. If emotional problems have been part of the experience of your home, through it previous occupants, the subtle energies left behind will continue to haunt you. Feng Shui consultants, when moving home, will often demand information on the lives of the previous occupants before committing themselves to a purchase for this very reason. The good news is that you do not need to be affected in this way for whatever has been generated by human thought can be changed, cleansed and balanced by human thought.

Mental tools and weapons
Learning to harness your thought power for healing and self-development is rather like going into a mental gymnasium. You will perhaps be relieved to know that this does not require hours of meditation although meditative exercises that been outlined in this book are important for honing your skills. What is needed is that you use your mind in a positive yang way to tackle areas of imbalance that manifest around you. To help this process there are a number of imaginary tools or weapons that you can visualise yourself possessing, which will help with these tasks. This is why a rich imagination is helpful.

One of these is the sword, although Harry Potter fans might prefer a magical wand. An imagined sword or wand pointed at an object is a simple way for focussing and directing your thoughts as a concentrated beam. In this context the ‘Star Wars’ movies provide also some real insight into how ‘thought’, the power of the ‘Force’, can be used either creatively or destructively. To clear and re-set the energy of a room you will need to use the sword in combination with the element of fire, in other words to imagine that you have in your hand a flaming sword. Those who have study mythology will also know that this is one of the symbols of the archangel Michael, so calling on certain magical implements you are also aligning yourself to specific spiritual energies. My early training took place well before the days of Star Wars so the ‘flaming sword’ has always been quite natural to me, but I know that some of my students today prefer to imagine they have a ‘light sabre’. You might like to close your eyes for a moment and to imagine that you are holding a ‘flaming sword’ or a ‘light sabre’ in your hand. How does this feel? Whichever you use it is important to remember that fire is the primary cleansing and transforming element within the elemental kingdom and its power will cleanse any negative energy to which it comes in contact.

The following exercise can be carried out in you mind alone or you can perform this in a more direct way, by going into the room and physically acting out the different elements. Both work equally well. Some people like to put enormous effort into creating rituals of cleansing which involve the use of incense, physical implements, such as an actual sword and so on. This might help set the mood but it is entirely unnecessary. There are many advantages of working through the mind alone, not least because it means that you can always respond immediately whenever your energies are required. You are not dependent upon complicated rituals to carry out your healing work. It is also quite possible to cleanse and balance the energies of places from a distance. Indeed you have probably recognised already that neither time nor space imposes any barrier to the power of thought. If you think of someone or some place you immediately create a connection to them; the link is opened up instantly and the only impediment to effecting an exchange of energy is the limitations imposed on your thought power by your beliefs. As Christ came to demonstrate if you have faith you can literally move mountains.

Nature abhors a vacuum
The next most important point to remember is the simple maxim “Nature abhors a vacuum”. In other words if you remove an energy you will need to put something back in its place. The importance of this cannot be overstressed for failure could leave the door open for more destructive negative energies to enter. So what is it that we put back? In simple terms you can imagine any symbol, to which you feel a positive relationship, being placed in the room. This could take to form of a Christian Cross, or more preferably an equal-armed Celtic cross because it is more balanced, or even an imagined flower. When I first started doing this type of space clearing I was told to simply plunge the flaming sword into the floor. Today I generally prefer to use broad based symbols such as the Celtic cross, which signifies the four elements held within the circle of spirit although I often also use a white rose, which is another of the symbols of the archangel Michael.

Cleansing the Energy of a Room and Setting a New Vibration
Aim:  To cleanse and re-set the vibrational energy of a room.
Time: 10 - 15 minutes

Find a place where you can be quiet and undisturbed. This does not need to be the room, which you intend to cleanse although to begin with, it might be easier for you to be there. Sit in a chair with your feet firmly on the ground or stand if you prefer.

  1. Close you eyes and first carry out the exercise for connecting first to your Higher-Self and then to the Sun and to the Earth. Then follow this by putting up a strong protection around yourself.
  2. Ask the Sun if it is appropriate for you to carry out this clearing work. If you get a strong impression of a ‘no’ answer try to find out why. It may just be that there is some problem with one of other room that needs more understanding or some form of specialist attention. If this is the case restrict yourself to a room, which is OK or where you do not get a strong ‘no’ response. We will look at different methods to heighten this sense of awareness in the next chapter.
  3. Spend a few moments linking to the spiritual forces of the four elements. By just asking for their help and participation you are beginning to build some valuable bridges into this realm.
  4. Connect to the Sun asking it which symbol would be most suitable for this particular room. If nothing comes through in any strong way select a symbol and ask if this is suitable. If you do not receive a clear ‘No’ then you can assume that it is alright to proceed.
  5. Next imagine that you are holding in your hand a ‘flaming sword’, or if you prefer your ‘light sabre’. You might even experiment on which feels most appropriate. Sweep around the whole room, in clockwise circles, with the sword starting at the floor and moving slowly up the walls to the ceiling.
  6. Imagine that you are sending all of the cleansed and swept energy out through the ceiling into the outer atmosphere of the planet where it will be transformed and further purified.
  7. As soon as this has been done place the symbol of your choice in the centre of the room and sense that it is radiating energy that fills the whole space with its vibrational essence.
  8. Finally place a protection around the room and thank all of the forces of the cosmos for their help.

Spirit presences
If you sense the presence of a spirit you will need to deal with this first. How to do this is given in the next chapter but for the moment leave well alone any room that where you sense there might be a spirit or earth bound soul.

Your room will now be cleansed and hold a new energy depending upon what you have called upon. You can now proceed to clear and re-set the vibrations of all of the other rooms in the house, not forgetting the loos and cupboards. With practice it becomes possible to clear and re-set the energies of an entire house in one sweep by imagining that your flaming sword is passing through all of the inner walls of the property and placing one universal symbol in the centre of the house.
