Most of the recent books I have read on spirit intrusion and release have been by practising therapists. I was therefore delighted to come across a book which explored these themes from a purely mediumistic perspective. Mike Williamson is a medium and together with his team of two other mediumistic individuals has worked to help people who feel they are suffering from forms of spirit invasion. As the title of the book suggests Williamson’s thesis is that contrary to medical opinion the symptoms of schizophrenia are not caused by physical brain imbalance but by the intrusive interference of disruptive spirits. This concept is backed up by a number of detailed case examples, which I found compelling.

The book starts by laying out the orthodox stall on the current view on the nature of schizophrenia and the attempts to control its symptoms through medication. Sufficient detail is given in this section for the lay reader to grasp the nature of this illness, which can include hearing voices as well as disturbing physical symptoms such as tardive dyskinesia. Williamson then goes on to describe the perceived causes from a mediumistic/spiritual perspective. He relays in detail the approach of his team to clearing and releasing specific stuck and earthbound spirits from those who have sought his help. We learn that some spirits are quite happy to go into the ‘light’ when they realise that they can, whilst others put up considerable resistance. These latter spirits would appear to be dominated by a deliberate malign intent to control and influence their host in a disruptive way. What I found encouraging in Williamson’s approach was the recognition that invasive entities can be numerous and sometimes take a considerable time to be fully removed from the psyche.

For example, the second case cited in the book, a client named Rose, takes up nearly a hundred pages of text and goes into considerable detail of the problems involved in the releasing troublesome spirits. This accords fully with my own working experience in this field as this case took nearly two years before Rose was fully clear of any interference. What was valuable in the reading of this and other cases was the detailed accounts of what different members of Williamson’s rescue group were seeing and hearing. Spirits emerged as individual characters each stuck or trapped for different reasons at the ‘earth’ plane level. The process of spirit release work is to first help free the client from the intrusive influence of spirits and in the process to assist these lost souls move back into the light. Williamson’s detailed descriptions lent considerable colour to this process, for we come to recognise disembodied souls also caught in their own traumas needing help to continue their journey back into the light.

This is one of the best books I have read on the mediumistic approach to spirit release and should be essential reading for all those engaged in the spirit release field. The downside to this approach is the need to find a group of willing healers and mediums who would be prepared to give up time to visit clients in their own homes and to deal with cases that can sometimes be very disturbing. Therefore, for me, the great value of the book was the insights it contained in the mediumistic approach adopted by Williamson and his team. The book also highlighted the need for the client to fully participate in the process and to work on balancing and strengthening their own energies. According to Williamson, those cases which were not successful generally occurred because the clients were not willing to fully participate. Along with Williamson, I firmly believe that those that do can all be helped.
